Chicano

I realized that this blog has been a little food-centric lately. And while that's great--I love to cook--I also LOVE to read. So I wanted to share with you a book I just discovered last year. Yes, I know, this book is probably on Latino reading lists and high school reading lists, and college reading lists...but it only recently went on MY reading list.

Obviously the title caught my eye immediately. Chicano, by Richard Vasquez follows the Sandoval family as the make their way out of Mexico during the revolution and begin a new life in the United States.

It is a classic for a reason, and the 35th anniversary edition has a wonderful foreword by Ruben Martinez, who I previously recommended in my posting on US-Mexico border literature.

This is a remarkable story with so much heart. It was also one of the reasons I began to wonder about my own history.

What other recommendations do you have for Latino/Latina/Chicano Literature?

  1. I'll have to go to the bookstore and pick this up. Sounds interesting to me.
